Reporting Services on Windows Vista

When you try to install SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services on Windows Vista, the installer apparently fails to recognize that IIS7 is installed (assuming that you have installed it). The error message is misleading and is due to the fact that IIS7 components required by Reporting Services are not installed. IIS7 has been much more componentized than IIS6 and there is a magical list of IIS7 features that must be installed in order for Reporting Services to install successfully. The required IIS7 features are documented in KB article 920201.

Once you have SQL Server installed, you will need to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 November 2006 CTP or later as it addresses some Vista-compatibility issues. You can find the latest SQL Server 2005 service pack information here. You should now have a working Reporting Services install on Vista.

I have followed the instructions on installing SQL2005 and Reporting Services on Vista, but the problem I am getting is when you enter http://localhost/reports in the web browser you get the banner but no tool bar, so I can’t use the RS Web interface, I have installed SQL2005 SP2 and have VS2005 SP1, also if you try to access http://localhost/reportserver I get the following message:
The permissions granted to user ‘NT AUTHORITY\IUSR’ are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)

Any help would be appreciated.

The only way that I’ve found to get the Report Manager to work at all is to right-click Internet Explorer… "Run as administrator". Even giving users the "System Administrator" role in Report Manager and/or adding the user to the Reporting Services-related local groups (SQLServer2005ReportingServicesWebServiceUser and SQLServer2005ReportingServerUser) didn’t make a difference. Looks like Microsoft has some additional work to do to make Reporting Services ready for prime-time on Vista (and I suspect Longhorn Server).

Helo james,

I’v tried to follow you step to enable IIS feature but the big question, I didn’t saw "Windows Authentication" under Security Folder. how could this come ? How could I get this component to be active?

any help would be appreciated

@sugiato Sorry for not responding. The "new comment" email must have gotten lost and I only saw your comment when Thomas left a new comment. I would recommend checking out Thomas’ link to the MS KB article. I’m honestly not sure why you wouldn’t see the Windows Auth option under Security. It’s been there every time I’ve looked.

@Thomas Thanks for the link. You’d think Microsoft would publish these things close to the release date of Vista rather than almost a year later.

@Josh – Sounds like you have anonymous auth turned on for Reporting Services. You just want Windows auth enabled.

hi,
I have windows vista home premium sp1 edition
I have problems when trying to install sql server reporting service (2005) ,i activated the whole services mentioned above but still no result the SSRS option is still disactivated.
please help me.

Hi,

Thank u alot Mr. James,

I was suffering from This ( insufficient permission )
I saw your current blog and _ Reporting Services on Windows Vista Redux _ blog
and I could resolve the problem

I run the IE as an administrator and I ‘ve accessed the report manager successfully
and all the options was there.

Then I added added administrative roles to my current admin user (site setting)
and then I’ve added all the roles for this user from Home – Properties
Select (Browser , Publisher …) and now it works fine

i have the same error msg appearing on my page saying
“The permissions granted to user ‘NT AUTHORITY\IUSR’ are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) ”

I have no problem to run ‘http://localhost/reportserver’ and able to view from IE.
I have no problem to run and view the report when i run my asp.net application from VS.
But when i host the website in my IIS7, i have the error msg appear
